As human beings we are here to experience emotion. However, long term emotional stress and perpetual negative thoughts can become embedded and a part of who we are, eventually creating one or more ‘Attitudes’. Each attitude is associated with a different ‘organ’ of the body and each ‘organ’ is part of an ‘energy flow’ or pathway.
And so it is that an attitude can disharmonise the flow of Lifeforce energy in our body. Imagine a river that has been dammed by huge boulders (emotion). The flow of water will start to back up, causing problems for villagers further along the river. Maybe the water will spill over and flood a neighbouring village? Maybe it will stagnate in pools around the boulders. In JSJ, energy flow works in the same way. The boulders are our thoughts, feelings, reactions, attitudes, fears etc…they create blockages and upset the flow of energy through related organ energy pathways, rendering it weak allowing physical disease or illness to manifest. Disharmony in one part of the flow can lead to pain, disease (stagnation) anywhere on that pathway which will eventually spill over to disharmonise other pathways too. Attitudes keep us from living life to our full potential.
In Jin Shin Jyutsu, the first tool to return the body to harmony and relaxation is the breath…the basic expression of life energy, and accessible to all. To exhale deeply is to let go of all that we have been holding on to; our ‘accumulations’. When we make space to receive the inhale; renewed life-giving energy, we can begin to regenerate on every level. Breath is the ultimate healer. When the body is oxygenated it stays healthy.
The hands are our second tool. In Jin Shin Jyutsu, there are 26 points or ‘safety energy locks’ (SEL’s) on each side of the body along energy pathways. These SEL’s act as ‘circuit breakers’ to protect us from accumulation of energy. By using the fingers to hold and ‘unlock’ or release this stagnation and dis-harmony we allow energy to move freely. As we hold specific places around the body, in combination, energy begins to re-establish its flow.
Jin Shin Jyutsu works with 6 mental/emotional attitudes:
Worry – Stomach/Spleen – Thumb
Fear – Kidney/Bladder – Index finger
Anger/Frustration – Gallbladder/Liver – Middle finger
Sadness/Grief – Lung/Large Intestine – Ring finger
Trying to/Pretense – Heart/Small Intestine – Little finger
Total Despondency – Umbilicus/Diaphragm / Center of Palm
The basis of all of the above is FEAR or False Evidence Appearing Real.
At the simplest level, each organ flow/pathway can be harmonized by utilizing the breath and holding the fingers. The finger holds, or mudras, are the foundation of Jin Shin Jyutsu self help and offer us simple solutions for total harmony. Not knowing anything else about Jin Shin Jyutsu, this is something we can easily do to help ourselves…. hold fingers, thumb and palm. And in doing so, we begin to arrive at a place of awareness of this innate wisdom.
SIMPLE SELF HELP
Wrap the fingers of one hand around each digit on the other hand (giving them a hug, if you like. Fingers will touch the palm side of the finger you are holding). Hold for at least 5 minutes, or until you get a rhythmic pulse. If the rhythm seems too heavy, fast or too quiet this indicates there may be an imbalance. By holding longer, you can begin to harmonise this. You can do one finger, or all of them and change to the opposite hand if you like. Give this as simple self help to others. Children especially love it!
Often we are too busy doing, or thinking of other things to take the time to help ourselves. Just by practising these easy to remember finger holds, mudras, we can kick start the healing for ourselves. The most noticeable change is that when holding the fingers, and breathing without effort, we settle the mind which in turn releases attitude and relaxes the body thus creating space for transformation and healing to take place. A quiet and organised mind is the a first step to a healthy body. Give it a try!
